Commercial Gaming Industry: How Online Casinos and Sports Betting are Driving Record Growth
How Online Casinos and Sports Betting Are Propelling the Commercial Gaming Industry to Record Highs
Key Highlights:
- Commercial gaming revenue reached a whopping $71.9 billion in 2024
- Online casinos and sports betting were the primary catalysts for a significant 7.5% year-over-year growth
- The rise of unregulated, illegal gambling websites remains a pressing issue
Online casino gambling and sports betting played a monumental role in pushing the United States commercial gaming industry to new heights in 2024.

The American Gaming Association (AGA) reported that gambling losses reached an unprecedented rate in 2024. The total commercial gaming revenue surpassed $71.9 billion, reflecting a year-over-year increase of 7.5%.
2024 marked the fourth consecutive year of record revenue growth. Initially fueled by the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent government financial support, the expansion of legal sports betting alongside iGaming has sustained this upward trend.
The AGA’s annual report indicates a stark contrast between legacy gambling, i.e. the gross gaming revenue (GGR) from physical casinos, which grew by a mere 1%, and the impressive sports betting and iGaming sectors, which soared by 25.4% and 28.7% respectively compared to 2023.
“In 2024, Americans fully embraced the plethora of legal gaming options at their disposal—be it at traditional casinos, through sportsbooks, or via online platforms—culminating in another record-breaking year for our sector,” stated AGA President and CEO Bill Miller. “As we build on this momentum, the AGA is steadfast in its resolve to cultivate further growth that benefits consumers, operators, and local communities alike.”
The report accounted for revenues from commercial casinos, both retail and online sports betting, and iGaming, while excluding tribal gaming revenue and lottery sales.

Casino Industry Finds ‘Unprecedented Success’
The legal gambling landscape in the U.S. is more extensive than ever, with 27 states operating commercial casinos, 39 states plus Washington, DC offering legal sports betting, and seven states permitting iGaming that includes online slots and various table games.
The influx of gaming options correlates with record-breaking revenue figures for the commercial gaming sector, which has, in turn, contributed substantial tax revenues to state and local governments—approximately $16 billion paid in taxes by commercial gaming operators in 2024.
“Commercial gaming continues to illustrate unprecedented success,” Miller emphasised. “This expansion is largely driven by the growth in online gaming and sports betting.”
While traditional brick-and-mortar operations still contribute significantly to the industry, they have been outpaced by the rapid growth of online gaming platforms. Particularly in Las Vegas, which experienced a downturn at the end of 2024 compared to prior highs.
Miller also noted, “Despite the slower growth rates compared to iGaming and sports betting, the legacy gaming sector remains robust.”
Challenges from Unregulated Gaming
The AGA’s ongoing focus is on unregulated, illegal online gambling websites that have multiplied, urging federal and state agencies to intensify their enforcement activities.
An emerging concern within the regulated iGaming market is the rise of controversial “sweepstakes” platforms mistakenly labelled as social gaming outlets. Critics argue these systems effectively become illegal gambling venues. Additionally, unregulated skill games pose a significant threat to traditional casinos. These slot-like machines are prevalent in several states, including Pennsylvania, Missouri, Texas, Illinois, and Wyoming.
“Such unregulated gaming erodes any substantial economic gains and undermines the integrity of the industry as well as the wellbeing of communities,” Miller stated emphatically.
