Macau Casino Revenue Reaches $28.3 Billion in 2024
In a remarkable recovery, the six casino operators in Macau raked in 226.8 million patacas, equivalent to approximately US$28.3 billion, from gamblers in 2024. This impressive figure indicates a nearly 24% increase compared to the gross gaming revenue (GGR) reported in 2023.
The Road to Recovery
The resurgence of Macau’s gaming sector follows a transformative period marked by the lifting of President Xi Jinping’s stringent “zero-COVID” policy in late 2022. The casinos experienced a substantial boost, accruing about $5.7 billion more in GGR in 2024 than the previous year.
December closed the year with approximately MOP18.2 billion (US$2.27 billion) in casino revenue; although this represented a slight year-over-year decline of 2%, the overall growth throughout the year is promising. This December’s revenue was particularly noteworthy as it was the only month in 2024 to show a drop compared to the same month in 2023.
Shifts in Market Focus
Despite December’s performance, the overall positivity remains as Macau’s casinos have shifted their focus towards the mass market following a downturn in VIP clientele driven by Xi’s regulatory changes. As junket operations tail off, gaming establishments are prioritizing the general public and “premium mass” gamblers, investing billions to enhance non-gaming amenities and attractions.
Future Projections
According to analysts from Morgan Stanley, the recovery trajectory is expected to continue, forecasting GGR to reach around $30 billion by 2025 and approximately $31.2 billion in 2026, contingent upon economic factors influencing the Chinese market.
Conclusion
The robust $28.3 billion win in 2024 is not only a testament to the resilience of Macau’s gaming industry but also highlights a strategic pivot toward catering to a broader audience, setting a hopeful tone for the future.
